20 tunnels for “the new heart of Europe”
Roughly half of the 117-kilometre new railway line will run through a total of 20 tunnels. These tunnels are one of the central elements of the entire rail project: in future, the trains will run through Stuttgart city centre underground. The Filder Tunnel will significantly shorten the route to the airport and the trade fair centre and keep utilisation of urban sites to a minimum. Tunnelling the line also reduces noise pollution for the population of Stuttgart.
