Direct connections
In future, railway traffic to the south-east will run on the efficient Stuttgart – Ulm new-build line. Large sections of the planned line layout will run parallel to the A8 motorway and will be suitable for top speeds of up to 250 km/h. The new line will be used primarily for fast long-distance traffic, which will permit further improvements for regional traffic on the existing line through the Fils valley.

Main Station Stuttgart becomes more efficient
It is not only the tracks alongside the platforms which determine the efficiency of the station, but above all the access tracks on which the trains enter Stuttgart Main Station. Although the present station has 16 platform tracks, there are only five access tracks. This causes bottlenecks as the trains entering and leaving the station obstruct each other. The new Main Station is designed as a through station with eight platform tracks and eight access tracks (two each to Stuttgart-Feuerbach, Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt, Stuttgart-Untertürkheim and to the airport/trade fair centre through Filder Tunnel). Evening up these numbers means that trains will be able to simply “roll through” the station, creating new capacities which will also benefit long-distance rail services.
High-speed trains at hourly intervals
Restructuring the Stuttgart rail node will enable faster connections and lead to capacity increases which are unparalleled anywhere in Europe. The through station is designed to cope with four high-speed trains to and from Mannheim or Karlsruhe every hour.
