Urban and environmentally compatible construction
In 1987, the Brundlandt Commission gave the United Nations a definition of sustainability which is now regarded as standard: “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” As construction projects frequently necessitate intervening in nature and the landscape, environmentally compatible construction is increasingly important. Environmental protection consequently plays a central role in the Stuttgart-Ulm rail project.
The intelligent construction logistics system also minimises environmental impact. In most cases, the construction materials and spoil are transported directly by rail to and from special logistics sites, avoiding truck transports on road. Where trucks are indispensable, they travel on dedicated logistics roads and, wherever possible, outside built-up areas to avoid congestion on roads inside the city.
